The open source ecosystem is the cornerstone of Node.js development.
To foster a sustainable and thriving community, it's essential to actively contribute and support key projects and dependencies.
As a development platform for Node.js with an open source offering, Platformatic is both built atop open source projects, and built for users of open source technologies.
This is why today we have signed the Open Source Pledge.
What is the Open Source Pledge?
The Open Source Pledge is an initiative by a group of tech companies to financially support the maintainers of open-source software projects.
Why is this important?
Many open-source software projects are maintained by volunteers who often face financial challenges. This can lead to burnout and security vulnerabilities. For enterprises relying on open source technology, failing to support key projects and dependencies can introduce significant business risks, including vulnerability exposure, performance degradation, feature limitations, vendor lock-in, and community fragmentation.
The Pledge:
As a signee of this pledge, we commit to paying a minimum of $2,000 per year per full-time developer to open-source maintainers of their choice.

As a Node.js core contributor and the (co)creator of several popular projects like Fastify totalling at over 2.6 billion monthly downloads, I know firsthand how exhausting being a maintainer can be. I also see daily how active engagement with project maintainers leads to quicker issue resolution and faster response times. Contributing to open source projects fosters a strong, collaborative community, benefiting everyone involved” said Matteo Collina, co-founder and CTO of Platformatic.
In 2024, we have so far allocated $18,000 towards OSS projects.
Our monetary contributions are distributed as follows:
OpenJS Foundation - $5000
- The OpenJS Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth of JavaScript and related technologies. By sponsoring the OpenJS Foundation, you can directly support the development and maintenance of key Node.js projects and initiatives.
Linux Foundation - $5000
- The Linux Foundation is a non-profit that provides a neutral, trusted hub for developers and organizations to code, manage, and scale open technology projects and ecosystems.
GraphQL Foundation - $2000
- The GraphQL Foundation is a neutral foundation founded by global technology and application development companies. The GraphQL Foundation encourages contributions, stewardship, and a shared investment from a broad group in vendor-neutral events, documentation, tools, and support for GraphQL.
OpenAPI Initiative - $500
- The OpenAPI Initiative (OAI) was created by a consortium of forward-looking industry experts who recognize the immense value of standardizing on how APIs are described. As an open governance structure under the Linux Foundation, the OAI is focused on creating, evolving and promoting a vendor neutral description format.

Supporting OSS
Platformatic also supports Fastify via the work of our co-founder & CTO Matteo and other team members. Our most recent work here has been largely focussed on the v5 release. Outside of Fastify, we also support the Node.js project with regular contributions.
Our Node.js team comprises Stephen Belanger, Paolo Insogna, and Matteo. Participating in Node.js Core implores a significant weekly time commitment as well as travel costs for the collaborator summit throughout the year.
We spend most of our time volunteering on various OSS projects with “no strings attached,” focusing on improving Node.js and its ecosystem.
